AITKEN, Gnr. Robert Archibald

Royal Canadian Artillery, 41st/102nd Battery

Robert died of a heart attack during training at Camp Petawawa, He was a member of the 41st – 102nd Artillery Battery. and was 47 years old. He was born on the Isle of Mann, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Aitken. At the time of the Great War he enlisted with the Royal Engineers at Glasgow, Scotland and was on active service for the duration. He married the former Caroline E M Kirkness at Glasgow. Robert was member of the Church of England. He came with his wife to Canada in 1925 and for a time resided in the United States before coming to Simcoe six years ago.  He was well known here. Besides his wife he is survived by one brother, Albert of Glasgow and a sister.

Deceased was accorded a military funeral with members of the 25th Norfolk Field Brigade, RCA, Canadian Army (R). Robert  is buried in the Simcoe Oakwood Cemetery. Veterans’ Plot Grave V.21

He is commemorated on Page 22 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance.
